Governing question

How is force generated, projected, constrained, and converted into control?

The map answers by connecting source-grounded mechanics rather than by proposing a single master variable. It is a boundary around a problem, not a claim that the problem can be isolated from the other nine systems.

System boundary

This system follows material forces through movement, information, combat, learning, and occupation. It distinguishes defeating an opposing unit from sustaining control over territory and population.

State variables and resources

The principal state carried through this system includes combat strength, health, movement points, terrain cost, roads, visibility, zones of control, experience, formations, weariness, damage, and occupation stability. Some are stocks that accumulate, some are flows that recur each turn, and some are thresholds that change behavior when crossed. Keeping those types distinct prevents a temporary flow from being mistaken for durable capacity.

Actors and institutions

The game assigns causal roles to military units, commanders represented through player control, cities, occupied populations, governments, allies, and opponents. The player coordinates them with far more unity than their historical analogues would possess. The map therefore treats actor alignment as an assumption to interrogate, not a neutral background fact.

Feedback loops

Victories preserve experienced forces that win more effectively, and captured assets can support further campaigns. Attrition, movement friction, fiscal cost, weariness, and unstable occupation erode expansion.

The system should always be read with both loops present. A map of reinforcement alone becomes a story of inevitable ascent; a map of constraint alone becomes a story of fixed limits. Civilization VI is analytically useful because it repeatedly makes expansion generate the next burden that must be solved.

These are portfolios rather than binary moral choices. The relevant question is what mix fits the current horizon and what switching cost will be paid if conditions change.

What the game reveals

Force must be positioned, informed, combined, and sustained. Territorial control is an administrative conversion after battle, not an automatic synonym for victory.

The map’s value is comparative: it makes stocks, bottlenecks, adjacency, thresholds, maintenance, and network position inspectable across systems that the interface presents separately.

What the game abstracts away

Analytical boundary

Supply is mostly movement, units are obedient, and civilians appear through city modifiers. Morale, atrocities, insurgency, law, command failure, and moral responsibility exceed the model.

The simulation also fixes objectives, compresses time, and grants the player unusual knowledge and authority. No system map is a historical theory until independent evidence identifies actors, causal mechanisms, scope, and alternatives.
