How do learning, prerequisites, and prior choices shape development?

The map answers by connecting source-grounded mechanics rather than by proposing a single master variable. It is a boundary around a problem, not a claim that the problem can be isolated from the other nine systems.

System boundary

This system covers the accumulation of science and culture, action-linked boosts, and dependency trees that transform learning into available capabilities. Material construction of those capabilities belongs to other systems.

State variables and resources

The principal state carried through this system includes science, culture, research costs, civic costs, prerequisites, boosts, unlocked options, institutional sources, and knowledge gaps. Some are stocks that accumulate, some are flows that recur each turn, and some are thresholds that change behavior when crossed. Keeping those types distinct prevents a temporary flow from being mistaken for durable capacity.

Actors and institutions

The game assigns causal roles to research institutions, cultural institutions, cities, specialists, governments, military organizations that learn through use, and external contacts. The player coordinates them with far more unity than their historical analogues would possess. The map therefore treats actor alignment as an assumption to interrogate, not a neutral background fact.

Feedback loops

Knowledge unlocks institutions that produce more knowledge; practice accelerates formal learning; new options enable more capable practice. Rising costs and neglected branches create bottlenecks.

The system should always be read with both loops present. A map of reinforcement alone becomes a story of inevitable ascent; a map of constraint alone becomes a story of fixed limits. Civilization VI is analytically useful because it repeatedly makes expansion generate the next burden that must be solved.

Sequence and complementarity make history matter even without literal irreversibility. Learning capacity is built through institutions rather than appearing as isolated discoveries.

The map’s value is comparative: it makes stocks, bottlenecks, adjacency, thresholds, maintenance, and network position inspectable across systems that the interface presents separately.

What the game abstracts away

Analytical boundary

Knowledge is a national, fungible stock moving through a known tree. Tacit knowledge, secrecy, diffusion, false starts, contested truth, and independent inquiry are radically simplified.

The simulation also fixes objectives, compresses time, and grants the player unusual knowledge and authority. No system map is a historical theory until independent evidence identifies actors, causal mechanisms, scope, and alternatives.
