Governing question
How do routes, currencies, specialization, and intermediaries create leverage?
The map answers by connecting source-grounded mechanics rather than by proposing a single master variable. It is a boundary around a problem, not a claim that the problem can be isolated from the other nine systems.
System boundary
This system begins with liquid reserves and possible connections, then follows their allocation through purchases, trade routes, posts, and city-state influence. It ends where exchanged resources enter another production or political system.
State variables and resources
The principal state carried through this system includes gold income, treasury, maintenance, route capacity, route yields, range, trading posts, envoys, city-state thresholds, and network alternatives. Some are stocks that accumulate, some are flows that recur each turn, and some are thresholds that change behavior when crossed. Keeping those types distinct prevents a temporary flow from being mistaken for durable capacity.
Actors and institutions
The game assigns causal roles to cities, traders, governments, foreign partners, city-states, rivals competing for influence, and maintained units and buildings. The player coordinates them with far more unity than their historical analogues would possess. The map therefore treats actor alignment as an assumption to interrogate, not a neutral background fact.

Feedback loops
Exchange and influence produce yields that finance more routes, infrastructure, and envoys. Maintenance, finite capacity, contestation, and disrupted links balance network expansion.
The system should always be read with both loops present. A map of reinforcement alone becomes a story of inevitable ascent; a map of constraint alone becomes a story of fixed limits. Civilization VI is analytically useful because it repeatedly makes expansion generate the next burden that must be solved.

These are portfolios rather than binary moral choices. The relevant question is what mix fits the current horizon and what switching cost will be paid if conditions change.

What the game reveals
Network value is historical and relational. Liquidity and connections shorten time and distance, while centrality creates both leverage and dependence.
The map’s value is comparative: it makes stocks, bottlenecks, adjacency, thresholds, maintenance, and network position inspectable across systems that the interface presents separately.
What the game abstracts away
Analytical boundary
Trade is state-directed and prices barely mediate allocation. Firms, households, debt, currencies, unequal gains, smuggling, labor, and private political power are missing.
The simulation also fixes objectives, compresses time, and grants the player unusual knowledge and authority. No system map is a historical theory until independent evidence identifies actors, causal mechanisms, scope, and alternatives.
